Critical Security Flaw Discovered In Macos High Sierra

A major security flaw has been discovered in Apple's macOS High Sierra that gives any body access to the system without the need of a password.

According to developer Lemi Ergin who discovered the flaw and posted it on Twitter, the flaw allows access to a system running macOS High Sierra without the need for a password. 

 The developer explained that once the user name has been set to 'root', anyone can login with a blank password (the password field would be left blank). However, he went on to explain how to stop this.


Mac users can disable this flaw is to enable the root account on your Mac and then setup a password for it. When this is done, no one would be able to login without the need to password.

Apple has made an official statement and has admitted that they are aware of the issue and are working on a fix for it

"We are working on a software update to address this issue. In the meantime, setting a root password prevents unauthorized access to your Mac. To enable this the Root User and set a password, please follow the instructions here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204012. If a Root User is already enabled, to ensure a blank password is not set, please follow the instructions from the 'Change the root password' section," an official statement from Apple read.

Mischievous Websites Still Uses Your Cpu To Mine Crytocurrency Even After You Close Them

 Bitcoin mining has gained popularity, coupled with its huge current value, people are exploring several means of mining the cryptocurrency with out having to invest in hardware dedicated for the process.

Sometime ago, the Pirate Bay was caught using visitors' CPU time to mine for cryptocurrency in the background and ever since then, more website owners have indulged in the process. Security researchers are now saying that some website owners are using a drive-by mining technique that allows them to continue using visitors CPU to mine even after the visitor has left the site.

According to researchers from security firm Malwarebytes who made the discovery, the researchers described that form of mining as "persistent drive-by cryptomining" which is most likely to go unnoticed by most site visitors.


The security researchers explained that a pop-under is used to enable cryptomining to continue even after a visitor has left a site that has an embedded cryptominer. One major reason why the pop-under goes unnoticed is that the pop under is very small and is positioned almost off the screen.

"This type of pop-under is designed to bypass adblock and is a lot harder to identify because of how cleverly it hides tself. Closing the browser using the 'X' is no longer sufficient. The more technical users will want to run Task Managers to ensure there is no remnant running browser processes and terminate them. Alternatively, the taskbar will still show the browser's icon with slight highlighting, indicating that it is still running." Malwarebytes' Jerome Segura said in a blog post.

"Unscrupulous website owners and miscreants alike will no doubt continue to seek ways to deliver drive-by mining, and users will try to fight back by downloading more adblockers, extensions, and more tools to protect themseilves. If malvertising wasn't bad enough as is, now it has a nnew weapon that works on all platforms and browser."

Sweden Man Sentenced 10 Years For Raping 27 Girls Online

Courts in Sweden have convicted a man accused of 'raping his victims' over the internet in a case that is meant to serve as a deterrent to others.

The accused whose name is Bjorn Samstrom, a 41-year man from Sweden was accused of 'gross rape' and victimizing 27 children from the UK, US and Canada.

According to TNW, Bjorn coerced the girls into performing sexual acts in front of web cams under threats of murdering their loved ones.


The accused was handed a 10 year prison sentenced so as to serve as a warning to others who thinks crimes as such cant be categorized for proper sentencing and so would be waved off in court.

 Describing what online sexual coercion could be seen as,  Prosecutor for the case, Annika Wennerstrom told the National Post, "It's only the sexual predator's imagination that sets the limits. The technology knows no limits. So we have to adapt our mindsets to.'What can a rape be'? We say a rape can be different things. You don't always have to have the textbook case of a physical attack or physical coercion."

Wennerstrom went on to say that the girls were very scared and did as they were told. The girls were made to take off their clothes and penetrate themselves with fingers or objects. Some were even forced to involve some other children or pets in performing the act.

Hacker Jailed For Hacking Prison Network To Release Jailed Friend

 A US court has sentenced a Michigan man for hacking into the government computer system of Washtenaw County jail to alter inmates record so as to pave way for early release of his friend serving jail time.

 Konrads Voits from Ann Arbor, Michigan, last week pleaded guilty in a federal court for hacking into the Washtenaw County government computer system in an attempt to get his friend early release from jail. Voits admitted to have used malware, phishing and social engineering tricks to gain access to the computers systems.

According to prosecutors, Voits called some prison staffs while claiming to be a manager at the County Jail's IT department, tricked them into downloading and running a malware on their computer by visiting a phishing website. 

 Voits directed them to visit a phishing website "ewashtenavv.org" which mimics the Washtenaw official URL which is "ewashtenaw.org." The prisons staffs used their login credentials which Voits then used in obtaining the remote login and gained access to County's XJail data.

 This hack which occurred in march this year, allowed Voits to steal jail records of several inmates and over 1,600 employees. 

 Stolen records includes search warrants affidavits, email addresses, user-names, passwords and some other personal details.

Voits eventually altered the records. However, the prison staffs became suspicious when they noticed changes in their records. The FBI were called in.

The Washtenaw County spent over $235,000 to fix the whole mess caused by Voits between January 24, 2017 and march 10, 2017. No prison inmates were however released.

Voits is now facing a maximum of 10 years in imprisonment and a fine up to $250,000. He also has agreed to surrender tools used in the attack, including his laptop, four phones and an undisclosed amount of Bitcoin.

Voits is set to face a akibat hearing on April 5, 2018.

Bitcoin Now Valued At $13,000

 Not too long after crossing the $10,000 mark, Bitcoin has broken the $13,000 mark to be valued at over $13,000!

According to data from Coinmarketcap, which provides an average from all the major exchange across the globe, Bitcoin's value today went as high as $3,200 before dropping down to $13,000. On the hand, Bithum, the biggest exchange in South Korea values Bitcoin at $14,700 BTC/KRW as at the time of this post.

 However, it is worth to note that not all trading pairs puts the value of the cryptocurrency at $13,000. Some put the value below the mark while others value it above the mark. 

Bitcoin which accounts for over 58% of the whole cryptocurrency market was valued at $220.76 billion at its peak today. The whole of the crypto market is now valued at $376.7 billion


 Another coin of interest is the IOTA which is the Internet of Things Coin. The coin traded for a high of $5.55 today which is a massive growth of over 300 percent in just a week. Bitcoin hit the milestone early this morning to cross the $15,000 mark, while getting an increased value of over $2,000 just within 24 hours.

The cryptocurrency whose valued lied at $15,364.30 as at the time of this post, continues to increase in worth despite warnings that it might come crashing.

This new comes just few days before the launch of Bitcoin futures on two exchanges, including CME, the world largest futures exchange.


Leonhard Weese, President of the Bitcoin Association of Hong Kong thinks the spike in the value of the cryptocurrency was "mostly motivated by fear of missing out and greed".

The crypto market is valued at $404,325,218,386 with Bitcoin alone owning more than 53% at a value of $256,985,090,550.

Bitcoin Closes In On $17,000 New Record!

 Bitcoin is now worth $16,432.00 per Bitcoin as at the time of this writing! The cryptocurrency's value has kept increasing over the week, gaining over $3,000 in the last 24 hours alone.

Bitcoin whose market cap is put at $274,844,704,784 dominate about 65.1% of the cryptocurrency market.

Another cryptocurrency that has appreciated in value quietly is Decentraland. The cryptocurrency which currently ranks at number 50 had no difficulty in toppling TenX to take its spot. All thanks to a 177% increased value.

  With a market cap of $230,954,456, Decentraland is in pursuit to topple PIVX and MaidSafeCoin which has a market cap of $255,937,122 and $256,985,055 respectively.
