Torguard Vpn Review

Click here to read more on the uses of a VPN.

The name TorGuard do confuse many who think the VPN provider has something to do with the Tor Project though TorGuards says it has no affiliation with them. TorGuard which stands for Torrent Guard, suggests that Torrent seeders and leechers are also among the targeted audience by the VPN service provider.

TorGuard advertises itself as the best VPN service provider, promising users of a safe and anonymous status when carrying out online activities. This VPN service also prides its self as the best VPN out there for torrent users -- with its specially optimized proxy for P2P file sharing.

So is TorGuard what they claim to be? In this review we would be looking at TorGuards features, what they have to offer, what distinguishes them from other VPN service providers and if they are worth you hiring their service. By the end of this review, you would have had your answer.

Security:

First thing users look out for are the security options available. TorGuard uses a 128 - 256-bit AES encryption to provide a high standard level of security. There is also the 'Stealth proxy' option for Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) bypass for users in countries like UAE, China, Iran, Syria or in any country where VPN protocols are heavily filtered by the government.

TorGuard VPN also block ads, live malware and also the VPN has an inbuilt leak protection against WebRTC, DNS and IPV6 leaks. Protocols such as OpenVPN, PPTP and L2TP are all supported by TorGuard VPN service.

Servers & location:
There are about 1600 servers in over 50 countries on the TorGuard network which provides enough option for people to choose from and achieve their wants.

Servers on TorGuard all provide shared IP addresses. Dedicated IP addresses are available only in Germany, Australia, Canada, Italy, Japan, France, Finland, UK and the US.

TorGuard's basic proxy service has about 200 servers in eight countries with an unlimited bandwidth usage on their servers. These servers offer subscribers plenty of choice and should well suite those who either want the full VPN or the browser extension service.

Supported Platforms:

Compatible platforms includes Windows, Mac, Android, Linux  and iOS so you shouldn't have no worry because these are the major OS platforms.

TorGuard also has official support for VPN routers like DDWRT, Tomato and pfsense firewall. Theres also proxy support for web browsers such as Firefox and Chrome.

Privacy:
TorGuard VPN privacy policy states that the VPN service provider keeps no connection logs. However, for the fact that the VPN service provider is a registered US company, many might be having second thoughts about their personal warta as seen with Pure VPN who handed over customer information to US authorities.

TorGuard 'No Lo Policy' simply means that they don't keep log of users activities and so there wouldn't be any user's activities or to hand over to government authorities if they come asking. TorGuard only keeps customer billing information. However, customers can still use Bitcoin to signup and then give out wrong information.

Help & Support:
TorGuard VPN has a 24/7 tech support team that attends to customers and even non-subscribers who have inquiry to make regarding heir services.

Support medium includes a 24/7 live chat which is available for customers and non-customers, Phone support, user forums, FAQ and guides to help users quickly resolve problems.

While writing this review, i decided to try TorGuards live chat and see how fast and efficient their customer service rep were. So i messaged their live support, aggressively demanding for a refund as i pretended to act as an angry customer. I didn't get an instant reply but got a mail response (maybe many customers were queued up waiting to be attended to).

I was aggressive in chats (i wanted to test them) but was surprised to find the technical staff knowledgeable, friendly and coherent in answering my questions despite how cumbersome i made it look. I applaud them for that.

Chinese Man To Serve 5 Years In Prison For Running Illegal Vpn Service

In a crack-down on illegal sale and use of VPN services to help circumvent the great firewall, the Chinese authorities have sentenced a man to 5-and-a-half years in prison for selling a VPN service without a proper license from the authorities.

To have full control and monitoring of its cyberspace, the Chinese government early this year (2017) placed a ban on unauthorised VPN services in the country, making it compulsory for companies to obtain a license from the government in order to operate.

The Chinese 'Great Firewall' blocks citizens from accessing popular websites such as Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, The Pirate Bay, Google etc. To get access to such websites, citizens employ the use of a VPN service which encrypt their connection and help in bypassing the country's firewall. The VPN usually hide their data, activity and then give an anonymous (fake location) so as to help prevent tracking.

Xiangyang, a Chinese citizen from the Guangxi Zhuang region was arrested and fined 500,00 yuan ($76,000) for offering a non-licensed VPN service from 2013 to June 2017, helping users to bypass the Great Firewall. He was also accused of generating 792,638 yuan ($120,000) illegal revenue.

Another citizen, Deng Jiewei was also sentenced to 9 months in prison and fined 5,000 yuan for selling VPN services without proper license.

January this year, the Chinese government announced a 14-month long campaign project to crack down on unauthorised sell and use of VPN services in the country.

Major Security Flaws Found In 150 Top Free Android Vpns On Google Play Store

They say that nothing is free, even those that are offered for free has some hidden expense(s) attached to it. It's just a matter of time before you discover what those hidden expenses actually are, and that is what also happens to you when you opt for the service of a free virtual private network (VPN).

According to a risk index carried out on the 150 most popular free VPN apps in the Google Play Store, the results revealed that 25% of the apps do not adequately protect user's privacy due to DNS leaks, and about 85% of the apps had questionable permissions or hidden functions that also threatened users privacy.

The risk index was created by Top10VPN to "help consumers avoid inadvertently using flawed apps that compromise their privacy and security." The 150 apps were tested for effective encryption, viruses and malwares, browser leaks, dangerous app functions and behaviours, and as well a full network test to check other security flaws and performance related issues.

Three of the biggest problems identified in the report that exposes users true identity are DNS leaks, WebRTC leaks and IP address leaks.

DNS leaks occurs when the VPN service provider secures Internet traffic of the user by tunneling contents of Web pages and messages but then fails to force DNS requests via its encrypted tunnel. The DNS requests are then made through the ISP DNS servers which exposes the users browsing history and online activity to be tracked by their ISP and other third party DNS operators. Now this DNS leaks defeats the purpose of a VPN itself.

About 38 apps were found in the report to have suffered from DNS leaks.

4 apps suffered from WebRTC or (Web Real-Time Communication) leaks, while 2 apps suffered from IP leaks which reveals the VPN user real IP address instead of the one assigned by the VPN service provider.

However, the report named two VPNs (VPN super free and Super fast Hot VPN) to have terribly failed in protecting users privacy and thus, described as "essentially broken and not fit for purpose."

Apart from the above, the report said that about 66% (99 of the apps) asked for unnecessary permissions that are classified as "dangerous" in official Android developer document.

25% (33 of the apps) asked to track users location , while 38% (57 of the apps) requested access to users personal information while another unspecified number of the VPN apps made intrusive permissions which included the use of camera, microphone, access contacts and even send text messages without the users knowledge.

The report said that 63% (95 of the apps) were tagged as featuring functions with the potential doe privacy abuse, while 18% (27 of the apps) were flagged for potential viruses or malware when scanned.

However, the risk index report points out that by simply asking for permissions does not mean that an app is malicious, though the behaviour won't help in gaining user's trust. For some VPN service providers these permissions are as a result of careless on the programmers part, while others its in other to help help sasaran the advertising that keeps the apps free.

"Unfortunately for consumers, there is no way to determine whether a risky permission is there in order to spy on them, to better advertise to them or just as a result of poor development practices," the report said.

The risk index notes that none of today's top paid VPN services require such permissions or contain such functions.

Some of the VPN service providers responded to the findings, explaining the reasons for the permissions, while some that had issues promised to address them.

Below is the list of the 150 VPN apps in the Google Play Store that were tested. Note, these apps are the most popular VPN apps on the Android OS, and have raked in 260 million download on the Play Store alone.

While hacks that come as a result from the device manufacturer isn't that common, though we hear of it once in a while, we will focus on tips that has to do with user carelessness and third-party apps.

In case you are wondering what could happen when your Android device gets compromised. Here are a few:
  • Once your device gets compromise, a hacker could be spying on you
  • Your data could be stolen and traded online on underground sites
  • Your identity could be stolen
  • The stolen data from your device could used to create a fake profile of you which might be used in performing some fraud transactions that will end sending the cops looking for you.
  • Your bank statements, passwords and even your funds could be stolen when you Android device gets compromised.
Now that we're done with the dangers, lets look at the ways to avoid getting hacked.

Steps to Secure Your Android Device From Hackers

1. Make use of Android Built-in security system:
The first thing to do when you get an Android device is to security up its security system in case things go wrong. There are several options for you from PIN, Password, Pattern, Finger print and Face unlock. Always remember to use combinations that aren't easy to guess.

2. Always keep your device software up to date:
Ensure to always keep your device software up to date with the latest software upgrade from your device manufacturer. The reason why you have to always keep your Android device update is for you to be able to receive the latest security patch and new features that will enhance your device security.

3. Stick to the Google Play Store:
There are billions of Android applications roaming the web, most of whom pose a risk to your privacy and security. The only way to avoid getting your device compromised is by sticking to apps on the official Android store .... Google Play Store. Though, even the Google Play Store has its own lapses.

4. Always use a VPN whenever you are online:
The best way to secure your data and device is to get the service of a trusted virtual private network (VPN) for online security. A VPN protects your online connection by encrypting and routing your connection via secure severs to mask you in the eyes of hackers, your ISP and other form of cooperate snoopers.

There are several VPN service out there and trust me, their service varies. Some suffer from DNS leak, while others expose the users real IP address, etc which kills the actual aim of a VPN. Click here for more information for top VPN services exposing users data. Click here for Ivacy VPN which offers a trusted service.
5. Don't root your Android if you don't know how it works!!!
Giving your Android device root access has so many advantage and as well as disadvantages. Infact, the whole advantage would mean nothing when your device gets hacked because of it's root access. Root access grants you the ability to tweak your Android device into whatever form or stuff that you and does the hacker that is waiting by the corner!

6. Avoid opening unknown links. If you must open them, use......:
Avoid clicking or opening unknown links that might pop up when you browse or those that might show up in your mail. However, if you must visits any of these links, simple copy the link(s), open and connect your VPN app, and then open the link(s) in incognito mode in your browser.

7. Use public/ Free WiFi if ............:
Public WiFi are hubs for hackers and cybercriminals. If you must use any public WiFi, get a VPN service before connecting to it. This will protect your data while you are on the network.

8. Use Two-Factor authentication:
Always ensure to use 2Factor authentication on your online services (if available) and as well on your Android. If this is enabled and eventually your Android gets compromised, the password or PIN alone won't be able grant the person access to your account as additional security verification will be needed for the access.

9. Occasional delete browser history and cache:
Once in a while, ensure to clear the stored cookies and cache in your  browser. This makes it hard for the hacker to monitor your behaviour.

10. Avoid saving your password in browser:
The aim of saving our logins in web browsers is for our convenience and to enable us have easy access to those online service that we regularly visit without having to input our passwords each time.

However, if our phone fall into the wrong hands, the person can easily go to our phones settings and get all the logins and the use it for whatever purpose that he or she has in mind. Instead, use a trusted password manager for your passwords.

Finally! Facebook Has Decided To Shutdown Its Spyware Onavo Vpn App

Social media giant Facebook is putting an end to its unpaid market research programs by pulling its Onavo VPN app from the Google Play Store, six months after it pulled the iOS version of Onavo VPN from Apple App Store, TechCrunch reports.

"Market research helps companies build better products for people," a Facebook spokesperson told Techcrunch while confirming the change. "We are shifting our focus to reward-based market which means we're going to end the Onavo program."

Acquired by Facebook in 2013 for a reported fee of $200 million, Onavo VPN promised to limit other applications from using too much data, and as well encrypt user's personal information and connection via a secure tunnel. The company however used the app for market research.

Facebook used the Onavo Protect VPN app to monitor website people visit and as well as time spent, and other things. The data Facebook got fom Onavo Protect showed that WhatsApp users were sending as much as twice the messages sent on Facebook Messenger. This insight convinced Facebook to buy the messaging service for the sum of $19 billion.

The data Facebook analyzed from Onavo Protect VPN also helped it to monitors competitors, figure out what features or app to clone and integrate. Snapchat is a very big example here. Facebook used the Onavo Protect VPN app to discover some of  Snapchat's features which it then added to Instagram to grow and maintain her user base.

Facebook came under heavy scrutiny after a TechCrunch reports.

Also Read: TechCrunch report revealed that it used code from Onavo Protect to build another app called "Facebook Research." The social media giant paid people to install the app in order to harvest every single meaningful data on their device.

"Facebook has been paying users ages 13 to 35 up to $20 per month plus referral fees to sell their privacy by installing the iOS or Android 'Facebook Research' app," a TechCrunch report said.

In response to Facebook's actions, Apple banned Facebook's enterprise certificate and as well broke all of internal applications because Facebook violated the App Store guidelines. Facebook prompted Participants of the jadwal to install an enterprise certificate, which Apple only allows developers to use for coporate apps and internal testing.

Though Facebook will kill Onavo Protect, TechCrunch notes that the app, will for now continue to operate as a "Virtual Private Network in the short-term to allow users to find a replacement."

Free Vpn(Unlimited Connections)

So, one of the many benefits of being a student is that you get free access to a lot of stuff.

One of the best such student dev. kits is the Github Student Developer Pack.

It has lots of free goodies that you can go check out in detail.

One of the best things that is included in the pack however is 50$ of Digital Ocean credits.

And this is how we will setup our own private VPS that will give us free unlimited VPN connections for about 12 months depending on your data needs.

Here are the steps to do so -

1. Make your GH account using a .ac or .edu mail id. (So that it is eligible for the GH student pack)
2. Get your GH student pack .
3. Make a new Digital Ocean account. (DO might ask CC informasi for verification purposes)
Remember to use the following referral link while signing up to get free 10$ of Digital Ocean credits - https://m.do.co/c/0fb06a5c5cf9

4. Once you have created the account, create a support ticket to apply the GH promo code since only customer support executives can apply it to an account. Just keep the ticket title as "Help with applying GH student Promo code" and paste the promo code you got from GH student pack in the body asking them to apply the code for 50$ of credit. They will reply back in 1 hrs with the promo applied.
5. Once you are signed up and ready to roll, create a droplet
6. Choose a config according to your needs, I prefer the 5$/pm droplet since it has about 1000gigs of bandwidth and running a VPN barely costs any RAM or CPU. Also choose a Data center region, I am using a US based data center since it allows me to access US only websites. You can choose Indian servers for better ping. Use Ubuntu 16.04 as your OS.

7. Once it is up and running, SSH into the droplet.
8. Run the following script in command-line -

wget https://git.io/vpn -O openvpn-install.sh && bash openvpn-install.sh

9.  Follow the interactive tutorial upon the execution of the above script. Use the default values except for the following options:
a. Which protocol do you want for OpenVPN connections?
  - TCP
b. What port do you want OpenVPN listening to?
  - 443
c. Which DNS do you want to use with the VPN?

8. Run the following script in command-line -

wget https://git.io/vpn -O openvpn-install.sh && bash openvpn-install.sh

 - Google
10. Copy the generated client.ovpn file to your client.
10. Install an open-vpn client (either on your phone or your Desktop) and run from the generated config.
For ubuntu you can do this via -
sudo apt install openvpn network-manager-openvpn-gnome
11. Et. Voila, unrestricted unlimited VPN. (Also helps get past pesky proxy issues on your phone)

Have fun with your free VPN connection ;)

P.S. - You can also use the above droplet to host your own websites and other cool stuff. You basically have your own VPS! :D

Securetun For Free Unlimited Internet Access On Any Isp In The World

SecureTun is a free tunneling app that provides users with encrypted connection while surfing the web online.

Just like other tunneling apps, SecureTun protects users data from hackers, snoopers and other forms of online threat. While these tunneling apps can be used for offering users online protection, these apps can also be configured to provide users with free Internet access to the web.

When i say "free Internet access", i mean users will be able to surf the web for free without the need to subscribe or buy data. This tunneling app has the capability to use its inbuilt features to bypass your Internet service provider's firewall to to provide users with free Internet.

However, one major dilema users faces when they get this free Internet access is that their Internet service provider is quick to notice the loophole and then apply patches to block their access. The solution to this is the anti DPI feature which is what SecureTun posses and gives it an edge over other big tunneling apps.

DPI
DPI stands for deep packet inspection which is an advanced form of packet filtering. This DPI feature is used by third party applications, hackers, your ISP etc to monitor your online activities even when you are using a secure channel such as a VPN for your connection.

DPI is a tool that process the data you send by deeply inspecting its content. Its just like saying you send a letter to the post office and then the post man goes through every detail before forward it to its destination.

SecureTun comes in built with an Anti-DPI feature which cloaks the user's traffic and free Internet settings (That is if you enable it). This tunneling app ensures that your free Internet settings last as long as its suppose.

SecureTun features includes:
No daily data bandwidth limit
Compresses data
Provides online privacy
No registration required
Masks uses IP address
No speed limit
Increases Internet Speed
And more.
