Critical Security Flaw Discovered In Macos High Sierra

A major security flaw has been discovered in Apple's macOS High Sierra that gives any body access to the system without the need of a password.

According to developer Lemi Ergin who discovered the flaw and posted it on Twitter, the flaw allows access to a system running macOS High Sierra without the need for a password.

The developer explained that once the user name has been set to 'root', anyone can login with a blank password (the password field would be left blank). However, he went on to explain how to stop this.

Mac users can disable this flaw is to enable the root account on your Mac and then setup a password for it. When this is done, no one would be able to login without the need to password.

Apple has made an official statement and has admitted that they are aware of the issue and are working on a fix for it

"We are working on a software update to address this issue. In the meantime, setting a root password prevents unauthorized access to your Mac. To enable this the Root User and set a password, please follow the instructions here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204012. If a Root User is already enabled, to ensure a blank password is not set, please follow the instructions from the 'Change the root password' section," an official statement from Apple read.

UPDATE: Apple has rolled out a patch to fix the flaw

Google Adds Web Bluetooth And 2Fa Fingerprint Support To Chrome Beta 70 Web Browser

Google early this month celebrated Chrome 10th anniversary. Now the Alphabets company is introducing some useful features to Chrome 70 which is still in a beta form.

According to the Chromium blog, the Chrome Beta 70 hopes to make logging into websites a little by allowing Chrome users to use their Android fingerprint reader or Mac device Touch ID sensor as a form of two-factor authentication. This feature will save users time because there won't be need for users to enter password or other sensitive information.

Another feature is the Web Bluetooth. This feature will allow sites to securely communicate with nearby Bluetooth devices. This feature is been made available for Windows 10 users for the first time with the coming of Chrome 70, though the feature has been made available for Android, ChromeOS and macOS since Chrome 56. Earlier version Windows and Linux can still access it via this flag: chrome://flags/#enable-experimental-web-platform-features

To increase privacy, Chrome 70 will no longer include the Android and iOS builds number in the user-agent identification string visible to websites. This is necessary so as to prevent exploits targeting fingerprinting and other forms of abuses.

Google's decision to remove its build numbers from iOS and Android follows in the step of Apple's Safari to freeze the build number at 15E148.

Google removed the "Secure" tag from the URL kafe in Chrome 69 when users visit a complaint site(HTTPS), however, Chrome 70 will  display a "Not Secure" warning and red icon when users visits a non-complaint site (HTTP) so as to warn users that the site isn't secure.

Chrome 70 Beta will exit full screen mode to ensure that users have proper context before making any decision on obrolan boxes such as authentication or payment prompts.

Developers using the Chrome 70 Beta will be able to experiment with a Shape Detection API that can be used to identify faces, barcodes, and text in images through the web. This will help improve  features that rely on OCR (onscreen character recognition) so that you can easily turn a photo of a text document into a PDF, or simply make it easier to scan in a QR code without needing to pull out a second device.

This Link Will Crash Any Ios, Macos Or Watchos 5 Device

A newly discovered bug is causing havoc for iOS, macOS and wachOS 5 users. By simply visiting a web page that contain certain CSS and HTML, iOS users device will be forced to restart while macOS users device will freeze.

This bug is so strong that iOS and macOS users dont have to visit  a website to trigger it-- a shortcut is enough. However, Windows, Android and Linux users are not affected by this bug.

Discovered by security researcher Sabri Haddouche, the security researcher provided a proof-of-concept demo and source code for the crash which he named "Safari Ripper".

"The attack uses a weakness in the -webkit-backdrop-filter CSS property," Haddouhce told BleepingComputer. "By using nested divs with that property, we can quickly consume all graphic resources and crash or freeze the OS. This attack does not require Javascript to be enabled therefore it also works in Mail. On macOS, the UI freeze. On iOS, the device restart."

The security researcher explained that the bug affected all browsers on iOS, as well as Safari and Mail in macOS because they all use the WebKit rendering engine. The App store rules forbids anyone from bringing their own rendering engine.
For iOS users, the version of OS determines the outcome. Those on iOS 12 will suffer a reboot while those on iOS 11.4.1 the bug will cause a respring.

For macOS, the bug will force Mail and Safari to freeze for a second and then slow down the computer. Worse still, the crash can done by simply creating a shortcut to it.

If you are viewing this page in Safari on iOS and will like to crash you device, simply click this link. Wait! i said crash your device so don't say i didn't warn you.

In 2015, another bug called the "Effective Power" bug allowed anyone to remotely reboot iPhones by using a special sequence of characters.

Another bug incident happened in 2016. This bug froze several iPhone devices when the user played a certain mp4 video in Apple's Safari browser.

This bug will only last for a short while before apple creates a fix for it.
