Russian Government Fines Telegram For Refusing To Give Up User's Data

Popular messaging app Telegram was fined on Monday by a Russian court for failing to provide the country's security services with encryption keys to reads user's messaging data.

According to reports from TASS news agency, the court imposed an 800,000-ruble fine (about $14,000) on Telegram for failure to "provide law enforcement agencies with information" about its users and their messages.

Telegram is a free messaging platform which let users to exchange messages, photos, videos, files of different format, make calls between themselves. Every activity carried out on Telegram is encrypted and hidden from the Internet Service Providers and government agencies. The mode in which Telegram operates has attracted over 100 million users since its launch in 2013.

Sometime ago in September, Telegram self-exiled Russian founder Pavel Durov said that the FSB had demanded backdoor access to the Telegram messaging platform, but Telegram did not  provide the access keys.

Durov posted online the letter FSB had sent to Telegram in July demanding for "information necessary to decode user's sent, received, delivered and processed electronic messages."

In June 2017, Russia's state communications watchdog threatened to ban Telegram for failing to provide documents, though Telegram later registered but refused to agree on the data storage demands section. The document stated that all companies on the register must provide the FSB with information regarding users interactions.

Telegram has 10 days to appeal the ruling which was carried out on Monday. However if the appeal fails, Telegram would be given a grace period to handover the encryption keys of which if they refuse, they will be blocked in Russia.

When asked about a potential block of service in Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitriv Peskov said, "As far as i know...there is no discussion of a block at this time."

Heres How To Easily Recover Received Deleted Messages On Telegram And Whatsapp

WhatsApp recently added a feature called "Delete For Everyone" on WhatsApp, a feature that allows WhatsApp users to delete sent messages within a span of seven minutes.

This new feature was welcomed by users on the messaging platform as it was seen as a solution to curb those embarrassing messages that users mistakenly send. However, a blogger has come up with a means to retrieving those deleted messages on both WhatsApp and Telegram.

According to Androidjefe, deleted messages on Both WhatsApp and Telegram can be retrieved  using third party apps which is known as Notification History or even Nova Launcher. However, it is worth to note that the this feature works for those on Android 6.0+ above.

The blog however explained some limitations to this message retrieval as such:

  •  Photos or videos can not be retrieved but only deleted text that can be recovered.
  •  When the messages are recovered, only the first 100 characters that can be recovered only
  •  It only works with messages that have generated a notification on the phone. That is, you can not retrieve received messages if you have viewed the send message from the other whatsApp user.

This new discovery is a cause of worry for others, but as you all know WhatsApp and Telegram will roll up an update to fix it. However, for the time being i urge you all to avoid sending nasty messages and hoping on the "Delete For Everyone" feature to bail you.

According to the threat Intelligence researcher, John Hou, the malicious app which is called 'Teligram [New version updated]' masquerades as an update to the original Telegram app, and infecting unsuspecting Android users with malware and as well, spamming them with ads.

The maker replaces the 'e' in the Telegram with an 'i' and then changed the theme colour from blue to black so as to convince unsuspecting users that the app is really an update. The fake app makes money for the creator by spamming users with ads.

John Hou explained that the malware (Trojan.Gen.2) in the Teligram app is built using the open source Telegram code which is distributed to third party stores. The fake app executes the malware the moment that it is installed. The malware in turn ends up installing an ad clicker or a backdoor.

The researcher, however believes that the main motive of the person(s) behind this scam is to make money and not steal users data, though the possibility of the attacker(s) implementing features that may steal users data and perform other malicious activities in the future can not be dismissed.

Home to over 3.5 million Android apps, the Google Play Store has always been a hub where hackers sneak in malicious apps, beating Google security check. Unsuspecting Android users who believes that Google security check can't be bypassed, download most of these apps with full confidence of being secured.

Encrypted messaging app Telegram has acquired Challegram, and renamed it to Telegram X.

Or you can also configure the text size, for those who may want to increase or decrease the font size. Users also get mode too.

The original Challegram app was based on the open TDLib (Telegram Database Library) programs which other third-party clients also use. However, the Telegram dev team must have seen something special about this client before acquiring it.

For now, we don't know if this Telegram X app would replace the original Telegram app in the future given its better look and experimental features.

The Telegram X app is available for free on the Google Play Store.

Amid the good things associated with social media, one major negative aspect of it is fake news. Fake news is stories or news created deliberately to deceive or misinform the readers.

Fake news is created for several reasons, the most common of which is for political reasons. This topic reminds me of Rober Mugabe former President of Zimbabwe who appointed a minister to curb the spread of fake news and hate speech on social media platforms in the country.

The former president appointed Mr Patrick Chinamasa, a former Finance minister as head of the new Cyber Security, Threat Detection, and Mitigation ministry. However, Mr Patrick's first task was to clamp down popularly used social media platforms in the country and get rid of or regulate the use of WhatsApp and Facebook. This is where the minister got the "minister for WhatsApp and Facebook" name among Zimbabweans.

News rules regulating the use of WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media platforms in the country were made. One of such rules demanded that groups were to be registered and the direktur of the group to also have a government level clearance.

"Social media was abused to create a sense of panic, thereby creating some sort of destabilizing in the economy," Mr Patrick said.

Early Last year, an India magistrate court ruled that WhatsApp and other social media group admins were to report any fake posts or news that hurt religious sentiments to the police. Any admin who didn't take action would also be considered guilty and actions would be taken. Not long after the ruling, the Indian authorities arrested a WhatsApp group admin for not complying with the ruling.

Russia To Punish Facebook & Twitter If They Refuse To Localise Users' Database

Following Russia's attempt to create a separate Internet of her own, Russian Telecom watchdog Roskomnadzor has said that it will punish Twitter and Facebook if they refuse to relocate the database hosting Russian users to the country.

This move comes as Russia is planning to disconnect itself from the Internet as part of a planned experiment that is meant to gather insight and provide feedback that will aid her in creating a separate Internet that will stay independent in the events of foreign aggressors trying to shut her off from the Internet.

"The companies will either have to localise the databases within a certain period of time, which i suppose will be about nine months, or they will be punished," Xinhua news agency quoted Roskomnadzor head Alexander Zharov.

The Roskomnadzor boss expects Facebook and Twitter representatives to meet with Roskomnadzor officials in Moscow by the end of February to resolve the issue.

Russian legislation requires Internet service providers to store and process personal data of Russians on Russian soil. In fact, Roskomnadzor has the right to impose fine or even block those companies that are in violation of the law.

Russia plans to route 95% of the country's Internet traffic locally by 2020, in fact the country authorities even have a local backup of the Domain Name System (DNS) which have been tested twice in 2014 and 2018.

Last year, the Russian Telecom watchdog fined instant messaging service Telegram for its refusal to provide user data of Russian citizens. Telegram was later blocked from the country but instead, the block resulted in the disruption of services in the country.
