Facebook Is Testing A Feature That Would Link Whatsapp Users Through The Facebook App

Facebook seems to be testing a new feature that would link or connect users on its WhatsApp social media platform via a Facebook button.

News from AndroidHeadlines says that some users on Facebook are reporting the addition of a WhatsApp button within the Facebook app. This feature which seems to be only for users on Android appears to be available only for a selected group of Facebook users although one Facebook user alleged that after switching the app's language to Danish, the feature became available for use, though there isn't anything to confirm that the change of language is required for it to work.

Well, the WhatsApp button comes with the WhatsApp name and icon and it appears just below the Facebook owner username within the Facebook apps menu. It is still unclear what the WhatsApp button actually does but for now those that have access to the feature are using it as a shortcut to the WhatsApp application.

Those that have the privilege to test the feature are still hoping that Facebook adds other features and functionality of WhatsApp to the button other than just a mere shortcut to WhatsApp.

As the time of this writing, Facebook hasn't officially announced or confirmed anything regarding the new feature.

New Facebook Feature To Allow All Users Unlock Their Accounts With Facial Recognition

Social Media giant Facebook has come up with a brilliant idea that would help Facebook users to easily login or gain access to their locked account when they can't use other forms of recovery.

According to TechCrunch, Facebook is testing a new feature that would let its users use their face to login, authenticate a login or recover a locked  account. This facial recognition feature would come handy mostly to those whose account have been locked and can't use the two-factor authentication SMS or their email account to unlock their account.

TechCrunch got this reply from Facebook when they asked what the feature was all about.

"We are testing a new feature for people who want to quickly and easily verify account ownership during the account recovery process. This optional feature is available only on devices you 've already used to login. It is another step, alongside two-step authentication SMS. that were taking to make sure account owners can confirm their identity."
TNW's Matt Navarra shared a screenshot sent to him by Social Media researcher Devesh Logendran on twitter.

This test feature which is available to just a few people for now would be embraced by many people who will be find this method quite fast during account recovery.

Facebook Is Testing A Temporary Profile Status Feature

Facebook has confirmed that it is currently testing a new temporary profile status feature that allows its users to time it when to self destruct.

This new status feature which allows Facebook users to post text-only updates of up to 101 characters looks similar to the earlier days of Facebook when users could post just status updates instead of videos, links and other things you see today.

Confirming the new feature, a Facebook spokeperson told BuzzFeed that Facebook users have the option to choose if they want their status whether or not to appear in News Feed or only on their profile.

"We 're testing an update that lets people set a temporary status on their profile to let friends know what they 're doing or feeling in the moment. People have the option to set an expiration date for the status and choose whether or not it appears in News Feed or any on their profile."

Facebook Says 250 Million Accounts Are Fake On Its Platform

Popular social media network Facebook has admitted that about 270 million of accounts on its platform are fake.

The social network which has been under pressure over Russia using the platform to meddle with  the recently concluded US presidential election, estimated that fake accounts had increased from 2 to 3 percent while the number of duplicate accounts rose from 6 to 10 percent of its 2.1 billion monthly users.

The 3 percent of fake accounts and 10 percent of duplicate accounts sum up to 13 percent. Now this 13 percent from the 2.1 billion monthly users gives about 270 million accounts -- erm fake accounts.

Facebook made the disclosure in the small print of its earnings presentation during which it revealed a 79 percent increase in profits to $4.7 billion made quarterly.

Facebook explained that improvements to the data helped in identifying those illegal accounts, rather than a sudden increase in fake users registration. However, the company warned that there may have been some moments of high spikes in countries like Indonesia and Vietnam.

Facebook also admitted that 126 million users on its platform in the US saw adverts funded by Russia, and another 20 million on Instagram.

Sophisticated phishing scam and hoaxes are becoming a common scene on the social media platform. However, Facebook users can still use the platform without falling prey to hackers when they apply simple security tips as shown on technophilesblog.com

Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive of Facebook has said that Facebooks profit might be affected in the future due to the company's efforts in halting fake ads, accounts and others.

Facebook And Instagram Suffers Worldwide Blackout

Facebook and Instagram suffered a brief service outage in Europe, South America and some part of Asia and the US.

The two social media giants experienced the down time at the same time on Wednesday 1:02PM (East Time) leaving users on the social network without access.

According to a map displaying the outage powered by DownDetector, a service that keeps track of online sites facing connectivity issues, the outage affected some parts of Asia and a faint part of Africa.

Facebook users got message such as "Sorry something went wrong, we're working on getting this fixed as soon as we can" when they tried to access Facebook.

Instagram users trying to access the Instagram via the app were blocked from browsing or uploading anything, while those using the web got "5XX Server Error" message. According Lifewire, a 500 internal Server Error is a very general HTTP status code that means something has gone wrong on the website's server but the server could not be more specific on what the exact dilema was.

However, as at the time of this writing, the services of both social media networks were up and running smoothly.

Facebook Ready To Protect Your Nude Photos Only If You Share It With Them

With "revenge p0rn attacks" infamously becoming popular by the day, social media giant Facebook is trying to protect your p0rn pictures from being shared on their social network if only you are willing to share the images with them.

Images that are shared with Facebook will be hashed to create a digital fingerprint which the company can use to I.D the same images if someone else tries to upload them. This also applies to Instagram and Messenger

Currently, Facebook is working with the Australian Office of the eSafety Commissioner to test the system in Australia.

Speaking to the press, government e-safety commissioner Julia Inman Grant said that one in five Australian women aged 18 - 45 and one in four indigenous Australians have been victims of revenge p0rn.

"It is really important that Facebook is taking this proactive leadership step. What we'are hearing from victims is that its not just the initial betrayal of trust, its the fear and anxiety that follows them after the image has been posted," she said.

"This lets the victim take control and be proactive in their own safety, when so often the burden is on the victim to report to multiple platforms and trace where the image has been. Our vision is that these images could be taken down from every website simultaneously."

Facebook hopes to trial the scheme in the UK, US and Canada and  subsequently roll it out to other regions too.

Facebook May Soon Be Able To Tell If You Are Rich Or Poor

Social media giant Facebook has filed a patent application for a technology that would easily categorise users economic status...grouping them into either of the three  social-economic category; working class, middle class and the upper class.

According to the Dailymail, the social media giant wants to build a system that collects' personal data, such as education, home ownership and internet usage so as to predict their social socio-economic status.

The patent was filed as back as July 27, 2016, but was just made public on Thursday last week. The filing suggested an algorithm that may help in improving Facebook's targeting capabilities so as to be able to server more relevant ads to users.

"By predicting the socio-economic groups of users, [Facebook] is able to help the third party present sponsored content to the sasaran users," the patent read.

"Third parties are able to effectively promote their products or services, and the online system can provide a more engaging user experience to users," the patent added.

Users on Facebook would be asked questions relating to their user's age group. For example, 20 - 30-year-olds would be asked how many devices that they own, while those aged between 30 to 40-years would be asked if they own a house.

Other questions would include the user's travel history, the highest level of education, the number of internet connected devices owned etc to detremine the users status.

The patent said that Facebook would ask users "questions about income and using other personal data to make conclusions on its own".

The patent also adds that Facebook won't rely on the data supplied by users on their platform but would also refer to actions perfromed by the user.

Facebook says they won't ask users their income, hinting that people "are typically not inclined to to share income information, which may be sensitive information, on online systes."

It is still unclear if the patent will ever be targeted towards to users.

"We ofteen seek patents for technology we never implement, and paten should not be taken as an indication of future plans," a Facebook spokesperson told the thehill.com.

Facebook Would Soon Allow You To Set Voice Clips As Status Updates

Social media giant Facebook is testing a new feature that allows users to record a short audio snippet as a status update.

This new feature which is called "Add Voice Clip" acts as a status update option and it appears in Facebook's status update composer menu.
Facebook hopes to revitalize and get people to share more on its social media. This feature would come handy especially to people who want to share their status in their native but tongue but can't because of non-native language keyboard. This feature would, however, let them voice out their mind without any typing barrier.

"We are always working to help people share and connect with their friends and family on Facebook in ways that are authentic to them. Voice Clips gives a new medium through which to express themselves," Techcrunch quoted a Facebook spokesperson explaining the use of the new feature.

The Facebook spokesperson didn't disclose much on when the Add Voice Clip feature would be rolled out officially.

Facebook is also building two voice-enabled smart speakers namely; Aloha and Fiona. The Aloha model which will be marketed under the name "Portal", will have voice commands capabilities and also feature facial recognition to identify users for accessing Facebook through the help of a wide-angle lens on the front of the device.

The Fiona and Aloha smart speakers are to be launch in July this year.

Fake News: How Robert Mugabe Appointed A Minister For Whatsapp And Facebook

Various social media platforms today has become a major source of easily getting information to the public.

Social media platforms help in the spread of information, ideas and best of all, we keep in touch with the people who matters most to us in our lives. There are so many positive things about social media that it might take me hours to put everything into writing.

Amid the good things associated with social media, one major negative aspect of it is fake news. Fake news is stories or news created deliberately to deceive or misinform the readers.

Fake news is created for several reasons, the most common of which is for political reasons. This topic reminds me of Rober Mugabe former President of Zimbabwe who appointed a minister to curb the spread of fake news and hate speech on social media platforms in the country.

The former president appointed Mr Patrick Chinamasa, a former Finance minister as head of the new Cyber Security, Threat Detection, and Mitigation ministry. However, Mr Patrick's first task was to clamp down popularly used social media platforms in the country and get rid of or regulate the use of WhatsApp and Facebook. This is where the minister got the "minister for WhatsApp and Facebook" name among Zimbabweans.

News rules regulating the use of WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media platforms in the country were made. One of such rules demanded that groups were to be registered and the direktur of the group to also have a government level clearance.

"Social media was abused to create a sense of panic, thereby creating some sort of destabilizing in the economy," Mr Patrick said.

Early Last year, an India magistrate court ruled that WhatsApp and other social media group admins were to report any fake posts or news that hurt religious sentiments to the police. Any admin who didn't take action would also be considered guilty and actions would be taken. Not long after the ruling, the Indian authorities arrested a WhatsApp group admin for not complying with the ruling.

Malaysia too made a ruling against the distribution of fake news on social media platforms, threatening social media group admins with prosecution if they failed in stopping the distribution of fake news on their groups.

Last month, a Brazilian senator proposed a law that criminalizes the spread of fake news on the internet or other operating hoax-spreading bots. The bill proposed up to three years jail term for fake news authors.
