Beware! This Whatsapp Scam Will Easily Steal Your Payment And Personal Data

  
 Fake WhatsApp emails and texts messages pretending to come from WhtsApp warning users that their subscription would end soon while urging them to renew their subscription.

 Researcher Graham Cluley warns that those crooks aim to trick users into clicking links that are in those messages which might result to the user handing over payment credentials to the attacker(s).

"Have you received an email claiming to come from WhatsApp that warns that you have been using the service for more than a one and that it's time to take out a subscription?"

"Beware! This emails are, of course, a scam designed to trick you into clicking links that might result in you handing your payment information over to fraudsters," an excerpt from Graham Cluley read.

 Graham Cluley went on to advise WhatsApp users not be "duped into clicking on suspicious links claiming to come from WhatsApp suggesting you need to pay subscription to continue use the app."

 He advised users to "always be wary of unsolicited SMS text messages claiming to come from WhatsApp demanding that you verify your account and buy a WhatsApp subscription."

Online Censorship: Whatsapp Usage Blocked In China

 After placing a ban on the use of VPN early this year in a bid to tighten her "Great Firewall," the Chinese authorities in another move have blocked the use of WhatsApp messaging app.

According to researcher Nadim Kobeissi of Symbolic Software, China began to block the service on Wednesday but fully blocked it on Monday. He told New York Times that China was specifically blocking the encrypted communications only.

 The popular messaging app which has over a billion users encrypts messages sent between users in such a way that spies, ISP, hackers, and government agents won't be able to see the conversation since it's encrypted. Now, users privacy is the major duduk kasus with China. The Chinese authorities wants to monitor every activities of it's citizens and thus won't tolerate encrypted messengers like WhatsApp.

 However, WeChat which is a similar messenger like WhatsApp is left to operate in China freely because they co-operate with the government policy regarding privacy. Messages sent on WeChat are not encrypted and so allows the government pry on whoever that they want to.

 WeChat which has over 969 million active users, at any time answers to the Chinese government when they make demands. This month, WeChat notified it's users that they complied with the government, providing information that was requested.

Whatsapp's Live Location Feature Lets Friends Track You In Real Time

WhatsApp is set to roll out  a new feature on its messaging app called "Share Live Location" which enable users to share their location in real time to their WhatsApp contact.

 Previously, WhatsApp made it possible for users to share their location only on a static map but this new feature allows the user to share their location in real time which allows real time monitoring. Those who enables the feature can set it for a fixed period of time --maybe 10 mins, 8 hours or 14 hours -- or you can set it to what ever time that you want.

WhatsApp explains that this new feature is designed to be used to let others know that you are OK, and to allow them see that you have made it to your destination.

Here's what WhatsApp said:

"we 're rolling out a new feature that allows you to share your location in real-time with family or friends. Whether you 're meeting up with friends, letting loved ones know you 're safe, or sharing your mute, Live Location is a simple and secure way to let people know where you are. This end-to-end encrypted feature lets you control who you share with and for how long. You can choose to stop sharing at any time or let the Live Location timer simply expire.

 "Here's how it works. Open a chat with the person or a group you want to share with. Under "Location " in the attach button, there's a new option to "Share Live Location." Choose for how long you want to share and tap send. Each person in the chat will be able to see your real-time location on a map. And if more than one person shares their Live Location in the group, all locations will be visible on the same group."

This Share Live Location which is designed to let others know your location is a good update by WhatsApp, although there are concerns that the feature could be enabled without someone's knowledge so as to track their movements.

WhatsApp says the feature will take a few to complete before being rolled out to Android and iOS users.

Whatsapp Users Can Now Delete Messages Sent By Mistake

WhatsApp has finally rolled out the feature that enable users to delete messages sent to other WhatsApp users.

This new "Delete for everyone"feature is available for Android, iOS and windows Phone users although WhatsApp announces on its FAQ page that the new feature isnt available to all users for now (even those with the latest version of WhatsApp) although it shouldn't take long before the update rolls out to all users.

 WhatsApp explained that the Delete for everyone feature will be available for messages sent to groups and individual chats. When a message has been deleted, the deleted message would be replaced with "This message has been deleted" notice.

 However, WhatsApp warns that you can only delete sent messages within 7 minutes from the time that it was sent. The user wont be able to delete the message if he or she wait longer than that 7 minutes limit.

 Another factor necessary for the "Delete for everyone" feature is that both the sender and the recipient must have the latest version of WhatsApp, and also have the Delete for everyone feature enabled.

One major scare WhatsApp users are having is the fact that WhatsApp warns that recipient might see messages that were recalled , but did not delete successfully. Worse still, WhatsApp won't notify senders that their message(s) wasn't successfully deleted! So i urge those of you who might want to bombard your boss with "whatever it is kind of message" with hopes of deleting it should think twice before embarking on such.

How To Delete Sent Whatsapp Messages On Android, Ios And Windows Mobile

WhatsApp recently released a new feature that allow users to delete sent messages on their messaging platform.

 The new feature which is called "Delete for everyone" is available for download for Android, iOS and Windows mobile users. WhatsApp explained that the feature will be available for messages sent to individuals and group chats. Whenever a message is deleted, the deleted message would be replaced with "This message has been deleted" notice.

To delete the message for both the sender and recipient
1. Open WhatsApp and go to the chat containing the message you wish to delete
2. Tap and hold the message
3. Tap delete, then delete for everyone

To delete the message for yourself alone (This does not affect the recipients message)
1. Open WhatsApp and go to the chat containing the message you wish to delete
2. Tap and hold the message
3. Tap delete, then delete for me

Note: Recipient may see your message before its deleted or if it wasn't successful at all. And WhatsApp won't notify users if their message(s) wasn't successfully deleted.

     

Over 1 Million Android Users Fooled To Download Fake Whatsapp On Google Play Store

 The Google Play Store has always been a haven for cybercriminals who have been plaguing it with malicious apps, all thanks to the Play Stores poor security check system.

 This week Cybercriminals uploaded a fake version of the WhatsApp application and then managed to fool over a million Android users into downloading the app.

Dubbed "Update WhatsApp Messenger", the fake app which was discovered by some a Reddit user was said to be bearing the same title used with that of the original WhatsApp developers which is "WhatsApp Inc." The title of the developer made Android users to believe that the app was coming from the real developers.

 I know that you will be wondering how the miscreants managed to upload into the Play Store such app bearing the same title with that of the original developers. Well, this was made possible all thanks to a Unicode character space.

The app maker added a  Unicode character space after the WhatsApp Inc name which reads as WhatsApp+Inc%C2%A0 in computer. However, the cod added at the end of the WhatsApp title would be invisible to users browsing the Play Store as what they would see instead would be WhatsApp Inc which makes it to masquerade as the product of WhatsApp Inc.

Those who installed it said the app downloads and runs the real WhatsApp application served with advertisements all wrapped around it.

"I've also installed the app and decompiled it," One Reddit user said. "The app itself has minimal permissions (internet access) but it's basically an ad-loaded wrapper which has some code to download a second apk also called 'whatsapp.apk.' the app also tries to hide by not having a title and having a blank icon."

 Google has removed the fake app from the Play Store although Android users are wondering if Google is ever going to win the war against such on its platform.

Heres How To Easily Recover Received Deleted Messages On Telegram And Whatsapp

WhatsApp recently added a feature called "Delete For Everyone" on WhatsApp, a feature that allows WhatsApp users to delete sent messages within a span of seven minutes.

This new feature was welcomed by users on the messaging platform as it was seen as a solution to curb those embarrassing messages that users mistakenly send. However, a blogger has come up with a means to retrieving those deleted messages on both WhatsApp and Telegram.

 According to Androidjefe, deleted messages on Both WhatsApp and Telegram can be retrieved  using third party apps which is known as Notification History or even Nova Launcher. However, it is worth to note that the this feature works for those on Android 6.0+ above.


 The blog however explained some limitations to this message retrieval as such:

•  Photos or videos can not be retrieved but only deleted text that can be recovered.
•  When the messages are recovered, only the first 100 characters that can be recovered only
•  It only works with messages that have generated a notification on the phone. That is, you can not retrieve received messages if you have viewed the send message from the other whatsApp user.

This new discovery is a cause of worry for others, but as you all know WhatsApp and Telegram will roll up an update to fix it. However, for the time being i urge you all to avoid sending nasty messages and hoping on the "Delete For Everyone" feature to bail you.

75 Billion Messages Were Sent On Whatsapp On New Year's Eve Worldwide, 20 Billion From India

 Instant messaging app, WhatsApp has announced that users on its platform sent over 75 billion messages on 31 December, New Year's Eve as they ushered into 2018. This is the highest-ever number of messages shared on the platform.

 According to a press release, WhatsApp explained that of the 75 billion messages sent on New Years's Eve, 20 billion were from India. Those messages sent includes over 13 billion images and 5 billion videos.

The company also claimed that they recorded that much data between 11:59 pm to 12 am on December 31 2017. However, in a twist of events, WhatsApp messaging service went down in the early hours of Jan 1, 2018 for many users across India, Europe, Malaysia and some other regions. The service blackout lasted for an hour.

WhatsApp acknowledged the blackout saying that the outage saying that it had been resolved. Although the company didn't state the reason for the blackout, it however looked like the high volume of messages that came in within that hour might have crashed their server.

 Late week, an Indian lawyer threatened to sue WhatsApp if they didn't remove the emoji middle finger which he considered offensive and against the Indian law.

The Facebook owned company recently announced that they will end their support for Blackberry and Windows phones running out dated OS, has about 1 billion active users worldwide and over 200 million users in India which is its biggest market.

Whatsapp Testing Demote Admin Feature For Groups Chats

WhatsApp is testing a new feature on both Android and iOS that allows a group direktur to "demote" or "dismiss" another administrator, thereby depriving that user of the direktur status.

Normally, an direktur can not be deprived the admin status unless the user is removed by another admin and then re-added back to the group as an ordinary member with no special status. 

 According to WABetainfo, the feature is available in beta v2.18.12 has an option that in the Group Info section as Dismiss as admin, which allows an direktur to dismiss another one without the need to remove the user from the group.

WABetainfo explained that group creators can also be demoted or even removed from the group, but the Facebook owned company is working on how to prevent other admins from limiting group creators status.


"Using the Remove participant option, it is currently possible to remove the group creator from the group, but WhatsApp is implementing some checks that will prevent administrators to demote or remove him (or her) from it," WABetainfo said.

"At present, WhatsApp is developing this feature for iOS and it will be available soon for all users, instead for Android it is already enabled by default in the newest WhatsApp Google Play beta for Android 2.18.12!."

WhatsApp is yet to work on this feature for WhatsApp users on the Windows platform.

Whatsapp Business Is Now Available For Android Users For Free

WhatsApp has finally released the much awaited 'WhatsApp Business' for companies, organisations, and other small business ventures.

The business version of WhatsApp launched by the Facebook owned company is aimed at improving business experience such as making it easier for businesses to respond to customers and also separate customer and personal messages.

 The WhatsApp Business app allows a business to create a presence on WhatsApp by creating a business profile. The business is also to provide additional description like address, contact information, and enable quick replies for answers to common questions.


Accounts on WhatsApp Business will be listed as a business account but those with confirmed information will have a badge to show that it has been verified.

"People will know that they are talking to a business because you will be listed as a Business Account. Over time, some businesses will have Confirmed Account once it;s been confirmed that the account phone number matches the business phone number," WhatsApp said.

 Those features on WhatsApp Business will be for free in the long term, but will WhatsApp will charge for additional capabilities later in the future which is still good since most of the features mentioned above will do much to small businesses.

 WhatsApp Business is available on the Google Play Store in Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, The UK, and the US. The app will be gradually roll out to other countries in the next coming week.

Whatsapp Update To Allow Users Block Anoying Notifications

WhatsApp is testing a new feature that would allow users to decide and block notifications that are less or of no importance to them.

The popular  messaging application let users to decide their alert type by assigning priority levels to group chats, message chats, and other notifications. WhatsApp also support Notification Channel, a new Android feature that was rolled out with Oreo last year.

WhatsApp offers about 10 Notification Channel which the use can control individually. These channels includes: Group Notifications, Chat History Backup, Critical Apps Alerts, Failure Notifications, Media Playback, Uncategorised, Other Notification, Sending media, and Silent Notifications.


With all the Channels categorised, users can decide to either mark a particular category 'on' or 'off' or assign a priority level to it.  Priority levels includes 'Urgent' (this one makes sound and pop up on the users screen). High priority (This make sound to alert the user of a notification), Medium priority (This makes no or visual interruption)

Users can also decide what sound a notification makes and decide whether or not to allow a
notification content to appear on the devices lock screen.

Whatsapp Is Testing A New Feature For Android Users Called Locked Recording

 After increasing the Delete for Everyone time limit to 68 minutes, Messaging application WhatsApp is now testing a new feature that would allow Android users to lock the record button.

As noted by WABetainfo, the Locked Recording button feature allows Whatsapp users to lock the record button and won't need to tap and then hold the record button as it is currently on the Android version of WhatsApp. This feature is expected to solve the issue of users holding the record button before sending a recorded file.


WhatsApp users on iOS platform got this feature last year, and ever since then, Android users have been waiting for the feature to be ported to the Android platform.

Talking about recording and stuff, WhatsApp is also testing another feature that allows users to preview recordings before sending it to the recipient. This preview recording feature is expected to make it into the public beta version.

Fake News: How Robert Mugabe Appointed A Minister For Whatsapp And Facebook

Various social media platforms today has become a major source of easily getting information to the public.

Social media platforms help in the spread of information, ideas and best of all, we keep in touch with the people who matters most to us in our lives. There are so many positive things about social media that it might take me hours to put everything into writing.

Amid the good things associated with social media, one major negative aspect of it is fake news. Fake news is stories or news created deliberately to deceive or misinform the readers.

Fake news is created for several reasons, the most common of which is for political reasons. This topic reminds me of Rober Mugabe former President of Zimbabwe who appointed a minister to curb the spread of fake news and hate speech on social media platforms in the country.


The former president appointed Mr Patrick Chinamasa, a former Finance minister as head of the new Cyber Security, Threat Detection, and Mitigation ministry. However, Mr Patrick's first task was to clamp down popularly used social media platforms in the country and get rid of or regulate the use of WhatsApp and Facebook. This is where the minister got the "minister for WhatsApp and Facebook" name among Zimbabweans.

News rules regulating the use of WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media platforms in the country were made. One of such rules demanded that groups were to be registered and the direktur of the group to also have a government level clearance.

"Social media was abused to create a sense of panic, thereby creating some sort of destabilizing in the economy," Mr Patrick said.

Early Last year, an India magistrate court ruled that WhatsApp and other social media group admins were to report any fake posts or news that hurt religious sentiments to the police. Any admin who didn't take action would also be considered guilty and actions would be taken. Not long after the ruling, the Indian authorities arrested a WhatsApp group admin for not complying with the ruling.

Malaysia too made a ruling against the distribution of fake news on social media platforms, threatening social media group admins with prosecution if they failed in stopping the distribution of fake news on their groups.

Last month, a Brazilian senator proposed a law that criminalizes the spread of fake news on the internet or other operating hoax-spreading bots. The bill proposed up to three years jail term for fake news authors.

Whatsapp Threatened With Law Suit If They Fail To Remove Middle Finger Emoji

A Delhi based advocated on Tuesday, sent a legal notice to popular messaging app WhatsApp, demanding that they remove the 'middle finger' emoji within 15 days from its platform.

The Indian lwayer, Gurmeet Singh described the middle finger emoji in the notice as "... not only offensive but a highly belligerent, invasive, obscene, lewd gesture." 

"As per the Indian Penal Code Sections 354 and 509, it is an offence to show obscene, lewd, offensive gestures to females. Use of a led, offensive, obscene gesture by anyone is hereby illegal also as aforesaid. As per section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994 showing of the middle finger is also an offence in Ireland," Gurmeet Singh stated in his notice.

"By offering to use middle finger emoji in your app, you (WhatsApp) are directly abetting the use of offensive, lewd, obscene gestures," the notice read.


The notice then went on to demand that WhatsApp removed the middle finger emoji, character or photo within 15 days from the date of the present legal notice or the advocate would pursue civil or criminal cases against the company.

WhatsApp acknowledged the blackout saying that the outage saying that it had been resolved. Although the company didn't state the reason for the blackout, it however looked like the high volume of messages that came in within that hour might have crashed their server.

 Late week, an Indian lawyer threatened to sue WhatsApp if they didn't remove the emoji middle finger which he considered offensive and against the Indian law.

The Facebook owned company recently announced that they will end their support for Blackberry and Windows phones running out dated OS, has about 1 billion active users worldwide and over 200 million users in India which is its biggest market.

Whatsapp Testing Demote Admin Feature For Groups Chats

WhatsApp is testing a new feature on both Android and iOS that allows a group direktur to "demote" or "dismiss" another administrator, thereby depriving that user of the direktur status.

Normally, an direktur can not be deprived the admin status unless the user is removed by another admin and then re-added back to the group as an ordinary member with no special status. 

 According to WABetainfo, the feature is available in beta v2.18.12 has an option that in the Group Info section as Dismiss as admin, which allows an direktur to dismiss another one without the need to remove the user from the group.

WABetainfo explained that group creators can also be demoted or even removed from the group, but the Facebook owned company is working on how to prevent other admins from limiting group creators status.


"Using the Remove participant option, it is currently possible to remove the group creator from the group, but WhatsApp is implementing some checks that will prevent administrators to demote or remove him (or her) from it," WABetainfo said.

"At present, WhatsApp is developing this feature for iOS and it will be available soon for all users, instead for Android it is already enabled by default in the newest WhatsApp Google Play beta for Android 2.18.12!."

WhatsApp is yet to work on this feature for WhatsApp users on the Windows platform.
