ProtonMail has announced that its VPN service ProtonVPN is out of beta and available to the public for free. This release brings the free VPN service onto the Android platform.
The security focused company launched the VPN service 7 months ago, but due to high demands, free users were queued on a waitlist which others stayed for months before getting an invite.
ProtonVPN utilizes a security feature like a Secure Core architecture to help shield users from attacks by routing traffic via encrypted tunnels in different countries, and it also does integrate with Tor.
"ProtonVPN's Secure Core architecture gives our source VPN service the unique ability to defend against network based attacks," ProtonMail said. "Secure Core protects your connection by routing your traffic through multiple servers before leaving our network. This means an advanced adversary who can monitor the network traffic at the exist server will not be able to discover the true IP address of protonVPN users, nor match browsing activity to that IP."
The VPN app has a one tap login and connection so as to make it simple and easy for the user. Despite it being free, ProtonVPN doesn't have data caps or bandwidth limits or any form of restrictions.
"It is important to make the tools that protect online privacy and freedom widely accessible," ProtonMail Co-Founder Dr. Andy Yen, "for this reason, we are releasing ProtonMail on Android for free, without bandwidth limits or other data caps."
Though free, ProtonVPN also have a paid subscription plan. The premium plan which allows the user to access all the countries listed servers instead of just three servers, and also comes with an increased speed. The plan goes for $8 per month and $24 per month for a visionary plan.
ProtonVPN assures users of privacy and security saying the free service is funded by paid subscribers and subsidized by ProtonMail. So no fear of your data being sold or malware being installed on your device.
The ProtonVPN is available for Android and Microsoft and available for macOS, Linux and iOS via OpenVPN.
