US telecommunicatin giant T-Mobile on Thursday confirmed that it suffered a security breach which may have lead to the leak of some personal data of 2 million of its customers.
According to a statement posted on the website of the telecoms company, T-Mobile said it uncovered the hack on August 20 and took no time to shut down "unauthorized access to certain information" and then reported the incident to the authorities.
Information leaked in the hack includes customer's name, billing zip code, phone number, email address, account number, and account type (prepare or postpaid).
However, no customer financial information like credit card numbers, social security numbers or passwords got compromised during the breach.
"None of your financial data (including credit card information) or social security numbers were involved, and no passwords were compromised," T-Mobile said.
A spokesperson for T-Mobile told Motherboard that the hack affected less than 3% of its 77 million customers. The spokesperson said that the unknown hackers which were part of "an international group" managed to access T-Mobile servers through an API that didn't contain any financial data or other very sensitive data.

"We take the security of your information very seriously and have a number of safeguard in place to protect your personal information from unauthorized access. We truly regret that this incident occurred and are very sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you," T-Mobile said on its website.
