Bug Bounty: Google To Pay $1,000 Reward For Each Flaw Discovered In Popular Android Apps

Google announced that it would reward researchers who find serious vulnerabilities in some popular apps on the Google Play Store. $1,000 will paid for qualifying vulnerabilities

The new Google Play Security Reward Program was launched by Google in partnership with bug bounty platform Hackerone.

 The Google Play Security Reward Program which is for now available to only a few applications whose developers have opted in to the program. Apps like Dropbox, Alibaba's Aliexpress, Mail.ru, Snapchat, Line Messenger, Meditation app headspace, the Duolingo language learning app and Tinder. And all apps developed by Google are also eligible for a bonus reward. Subsequently more apps will be added to the program.

 Those researchers who find a serious bug in one of these Android apps would have to first report their findings to the app developer through their HackerOne page or their self-managed bug bounty program. The researcher can then request a reward bonus from Google through its Play Security reward Program.

"The aktivitas is limited to a selected number of developers at this time to get initial feedback. Developers can contact their Google Play partner manager to show interest," Google employees said in a blog post. "All developers will benefit when bugs are discovered because we will scan all apps for them and deliver security recommendations to the developers of any affected apps."

So far, eligible for the $1,000 bonus are just remote code execution though other types of security exploits would be added in the future. developers are to also include a proof-of-concept (PoC) which must work on Android from 4.4 upwards and also, developers must request the bounty bonus within 90 days of a patch made by the developer.

New Mirai-Linked Iot Botnet Threatens Global Internet Take-Down

 Just a year after Mirai malware held the world to ransom when it enslaved millions of IoT devices into a botnet network which cyber-criminals used in launching massive DDoS attacks -- disrupting several internet services around the world. Security researchers however, warns that last year occurrence might repeat itself.

 Spotted first in September by security researchers at QIhoo 360, the new malware which is dubbed "IoT_reaper", doesn't depend  cracking weak passwords in IoT devices to enslave them into botnet network but instead exploits for vulnerablities.

 The malware attempts to exploit several vulnerablities commonly found in different IoT devices. Targeted manufactures includes: D-link, TP-Link, AVTECH, NETGEAR, MikroTik, JAWS, GoAheada, Vacron, Synology and others.

Researchers believe that IoT_reaper malware has infected nearly 2 million devices with an infection rate of 10,000 new devices per day.

A check carried out by CheckPoint on an infected GoAhead device revealed that the attackers accessed the System.ini file to check for compromise. Normally, the System.ini file is contains the credentials of the user, but on the hacked device it contained a 'Netcat' command that opens a reverse shell to the attackers IP instead!

The check revealed that he GoAhead device which was infected using the CVE-2017-8225 vulnerability, was actually transmitting the malware after being infected. This actually explains the fast rate in which the malware is spreading.

As of now, those behind this are still unknown but one thing that is clear here is that the actors are preparing for a massive global attack.

 Researchers at CheckPoint also warned of the forth coming attack;

"Our researcher suggests we are now experiencing the calm before an even more powerful storm. The next cyber hurricane is about to come."

Android Users Spent Nearly 325 Billion Hours On Apps In Q3 2017

  App analytics company, App Annie on Monday revealed that Android users have spent nearly 325 billion hours on Android apps over the course of the third quarter of the year.

 The report by App Annie which is part of its Market Index Report, suggests that  the figure which marks a 40 percent annual growth is likely to be maintained in the near term.

 The analytics company said the Google Play Store and iOS App Store all combined, will come close to reaching 240 billion downloads by 2021. The forecasts predicts consumers to spend more than $100 billion in mobile apps on an annual basis starting four years from now.

 According to App Annie, the rate of in-app purchase is growing at a rate three times to that of total apps downloads which suggests that the global market for mobile software is maturing as seen in previous years where Android users downloaded more apps while iOS users spend more in apps. The Analytics added that the third quarter of the year saw both demographics spend $17 billion combined, 28 percent more compared to the same period last year.

  App Annie says Android apps download lingered around 17 billion mark in Q3 2017, growing by 125 percent year after year. On the other hand, roughly 16 billion iOS apps occurred during the three month period (which ended September 30) which is a 115 percent annual increase. Apps installs on Android phones keeps increasing and outpacing that of iOS.

Whatsapp Is Testing Group Audio And Video Call Features

 After announcing the Live location feature last week, Instant messaging service WhatsApp is testing another feature that would let its users make audio and video calls withing groups of their contacts.

 The introduction of video calls on WhatsApp made many users on Skype, Imo and other similar messaging platform to switch over to WhatsApp. However, WhatsApp has been left behind in delivering group video calling feature, a thing that has been existing on Facebook while Skype offers it in its premium version.

According to WABetainfo, the upcoming features can be found in the WhatsApp V2.17.70 beta.

"The 2.17.70 iOS update has very hidden references to group calls! Before it was an internal new, now it's all confirmed,"WABetainfo tweeted on Sunday.

"There are a lot of hidden references about group voice calls, but there is only one reference to the group video calls. So group video calls are partially confirmed at the moment," WABeinfo added.

 WABetainfo says that V2.17.287 beta for Android woul bring new features for group administrators which includes; the ability to set whether the group members can make changes to the group icon, subject, description. The ability to prevent the group creator from being deleted by any admin from the group.

WhatsApp is also testing a feature that allows users to "unsend and delete" sent messages.

This group audio and video call features won't be rolled out by WhatsApp until it undergoes extensive tests which would take up some time.

Bad Rabbit Ransomware Attack Hits Russia, Ukraine, Germany And Other Parts Of Europe

A new ransomware spreading like wildfire has struck Ukraine, Russia , Germany, Turkey and other parts of Europe affecting over 200 organizations within a few hours.

 Dubbed "Bad Rabbit", the malware which has a number of similarities to Petya demands 0.05 bitcoin (about $285) as ransom from victims to unclock their systems

 Security researchers at ESET have detected the Bad Rabbi malware as "Win32DiskcoderD" which is a new variant of petya also known as NotPetya, Petrwrap, exPetr and GoldenEye.

According to Kaspersky lab, the ranswomware was distributed via fake Adobe Flash player installer to lure victims to install the malware.

"No exploits were used, so the victim would have to manually execute the malware dropper, ehich pretends to be an Adobe Flash installer. We've detected a number of compromised websites, all of which news or media websites." Kaspersky Lab said.

Researchers at ESET security and other security firms says the Bad rabbit distribution was via fake Flash Player updates, but some also believes that the ransomware leverages the Mimikatz post-exploitation tool to extract credentials from the compromised system.

 Those hit by the Bad Rabbit ransomware attack includes Russian media outlets Interfax and Fontanka, the Kiev subway, the airport in Odessa, the State Aviation Service and the Ministry of Infrastructure in Ukraine.

Affected users would see a ransom note on their screen, asking them to log into a Tor onion website to make the payment. However, the screen also displays a 40 hour count down of which if the user fails to pay within that time, the ransom will increase.

While security researchers are still looking for a solution to this malware, i will advice every internet user to follow these little tips to stay safe.

India Overtakes The Us To Become The World’S Second Largest Smartphone Market

India has overtaken the US to become the worlds second largest smart phone market - news report from Canalys says.

According to the report, smart phone shipments in India's for the first time crossed the 40 million mark in Q3 all thanks to a 23 percent annual growth. India now sit second to China which holds the number one spot with 110 million shipment per quarter..

The competition between Samsung and other Chinese smart phone companies keeps getting stiffer as Chinese companies have dominated the India smart phone market.

 However, Canalys said that Samsung still remained at the top with 9.4 million shipments made in Q2, going up by 30 percent, though Xiaomi is set to over take it after recording over 290 percent growth to reach 9.2 units shipments.

 India for some time now has been expected to overtake the US in terms of sales and shipments given the large population which stands at over 1.3 billion compared to the 320 million population in the US.

"This growth comes as a relief to the smartphone industry. Doubts about India's market potential are clearly dispelled by this result," a statement from Canalys analyst Ishan said.

 The reports shows three Chinese brands (Vico, Oppo and Lenovo) rounding up the top five, while Apple can't be seen anywhere close. Although the US is said to have shipped about 2.5 million smartphones into India in 2016, the low demand for iPhones can be attributed to their high price as most of their sales are recorded only in urban places.

 Indians have appluaded the surge for smartphones although watchers have said that the India market will require a little more time due to sales hindering factors such as import taxes, poorer internet quality, complicated supply chains and local retail laws.

Apple Fires Iphone X Engineer After Daughter Uploads Video Of The Unreleased Device On Youtube

 Apple has fired an engineer after his daughter made an iPhone X hands-on video and then uploaded it on Youtube.

 The video which went viral on YouTube did not only record the iPhone X alone but also recorded some part of the facility, a thing that is forbidden in the facility.

 According to Theverge, the YouTuber whose name is Brooke Amelia Peterson went to the tech giant Apple campus to visit her dad and also to access the iPhone X before its worldwide launch on November 3.

 In the process she decided to do a hand-on video on the iPhone X but then revealed a "special employee-only QR codes" and also codenames of unreleased Apple products.

 Although the other revelations made in the video were unintentionally done, Apple quickly sacked the girls dad when sites like 9to5Mac and others made the video go viral on YouTube.

 In another video uploaded on YouTube, Peterson can be seen crying as she explained that her father was fired as a result of the video she uploaded on YouTube. She said the video she uploaded was in violation of the companys rule to film the unreleased at Apple's campus.

Peterson has removed the video after Apple asked that it be brought down.

Whatsapp Users Can Now Delete Messages Sent By Mistake

WhatsApp has finally rolled out the feature that enable users to delete messages sent to other WhatsApp users.

This new "Delete for everyone"feature is available for Android, iOS and windows Phone users although WhatsApp announces on its FAQ page that the new feature isnt available to all users for now (even those with the latest version of WhatsApp) although it shouldn't take long before the update rolls out to all users.

 WhatsApp explained that the Delete for everyone feature will be available for messages sent to groups and individual chats. When a message has been deleted, the deleted message would be replaced with "This message has been deleted" notice.

 However, WhatsApp warns that you can only delete sent messages within 7 minutes from the time that it was sent. The user wont be able to delete the message if he or she wait longer than that 7 minutes limit.

 Another factor necessary for the "Delete for everyone" feature is that both the sender and the recipient must have the latest version of WhatsApp, and also have the Delete for everyone feature enabled.

One major scare WhatsApp users are having is the fact that WhatsApp warns that recipient might see messages that were recalled , but did not delete successfully. Worse still, WhatsApp won't notify senders that their message(s) wasn't successfully deleted! So i urge those of you who might want to bombard your boss with "whatever it is kind of message" with hopes of deleting it should think twice before embarking on such.

Apple Users To Wait Longer For Iphone X As High Demand Exceeds Supply

 Apple users might have to waited longer than expected for the highly priced iPhone X due to high demands which exceeds Apple's current stock.

 The $1000 device which went on sale on Apple's website in the US on Friday at 12:01 a.m Pacific Time ahead of the device shipping next week, only lasted for 10 minutes as customers quickly exhausted the few units. Those who made orders after the 10 minutes were told that they would have to wait for about 5- 6 weeks before they could receive the device - a sign that explained everything in store had been sold.

 The "demand for Apple's new iPhone X exceeded initial supply within minutes of pre-orders opening on Friday for the hotly anticipated new device," The Financial Times wrote in its article regarding the excess demand over supply of the iPhone X.

Apple lovers in the UK too faced a similar wait and also reports said that pre-orders for the iPhone X in Hong Kong lasted less than 30 minutes as the device was completely sold out within that time.

The shortage of the iPhone X can be blamed on the low sales of the iPhone 8. Apple, trying to be on the safe side made available a few quantity of the iPhone X to see how the market responds.

 Although Android phone makers were killing physical buttons and making bezeless device, Apple wasn't sure how iPhone users felt about the iPhone X and so had to launch the iPhone X alongside the iPhone 8 so as to get Apple users attention -- a thing Apple never does. Apple never launches two premium device at the same time.

"We expect led times of four to six weeks for the month of November," said Gene Munster, Apple analyst and investor at Loup ventures. "We believe the iPhone X will reach global supply-demand equilibrium sometime in the March quarter, or three to four months after launch. Typically it takes time to reach equilibrium."

How To Delete Sent Whatsapp Messages On Android, Ios And Windows Mobile

WhatsApp recently released a new feature that allow users to delete sent messages on their messaging platform.

 The new feature which is called "Delete for everyone" is available for download for Android, iOS and Windows mobile users. WhatsApp explained that the feature will be available for messages sent to individuals and group chats. Whenever a message is deleted, the deleted message would be replaced with "This message has been deleted" notice.

 In todays posts, i will show you guys how to delete message(s) that you have sent to another WhatsApp user. Also, you can use this procedure to check if the feature is available in your area or not.

1. Open WhatsApp and go to the chat containing the message you wish to delete

3. Tap delete, then delete for everyone

To delete the message for yourself alone (This does not affect the recipients message)

 iPhone users have shown mixed reactions towards a recently discovered iPhone search tool in the photos app that sorts out photos into categories. This tool sorts out pictures that reveals b00bs, cleavage, Bikini or bra into a folder when the user search for the word "Brassiere".

This iPhone feature which sent Twitters users crazy has actually been existing for more than a year now although many iPhone users never knew it existed until now.

 Medium explained that Apple made an update to the photo appp which enabled it to use image recognition algorithm to categorize pictures. The photo app supports 4,432 different scenes and objects and it uses 33 categories such as "Favourited", "Nearby", "Brassiere", "Girdle", "Corset", "Trips", "Weekend", "Last Year", "Recent Events" etc to label pictures.

 "Photos app will generate Memories that fall within the following 33 categories. Default name of the memory will be automatically generated using metadata from the photos and tags from analysis of photos", Medium said.


 However, news of the photo app folder began to spread fast as different women came online on Twitter to voice their individual experience with the search.

Bitcoin Sets New Record, Now Worth Over $7,000

Bitcoin has set a new record as it surge past $7,000 for the first time, breaking another milestone less than a month after it reached $5,000.

 The digital currency which has been building on consecutive highs in recent days is up over 20.56 percent, and its market capitalization is now peaked at over $116 billion.

 Pricing for Bitcoin soared 12 percent to a peak record of $7,392 before falling back slightly to $7,025 at 8:53 a.m in New York. The cryptocurrency which is up almost sevenfold this year is now worth more than $100 billion.

"It is simply remarkable how resilient bitcoin has been in the face of significant negativity," said Lukman Otunuga, a research analyst at ForexTime, in a Nov, 1 note to clients. "This price action suggests that bulls have a very firm grip."

Elsewhere in the crypto markets, Bitcoin Cash is still making gains as it traded at around $546. The newly created cryptocurrency rose over 13.63 percent over the last 24 hours, rising at an amazing 62.16 percent over the last 7 days.

 The combined market cap for all cryptocurrencies is at a record high of $185.5 billion. As at press time, a Bitcoin goes for $7,075.90.

Over 300 Iphone X Devices Worth $370,000 Stolen From A Ups Truck

 Over 313 units of the new iPhone X were stolen when thieves broke into a UPS delivery truck parked outside an Apple Store in San Francisco and hijacked the devices.

 With a price tag of $1000 plus for the iPhone X, the stolen Apple devices are worth over $370,000 in value.

Local news reports that the incident occurred between 11:15a.m and 11:30a.m Wednesday morning. The thieves grabbed the shipment which was meant to deliver at an Apple store at the Stonetown Mall in San Francisco.

 According to the report, the UPS truck driver had parked outside the Stonestown Mall, locked it and then went into a nearby Macy to make a delivery when the thieves broke in and swept the truck clean of the Apple devices.

 The police doesn't agree that the incident wasn't a "stumble upon" robbery. They believe that the thieves knew exactly what they were after. "Given the dollar value in the incident itself it appears it was well planned," said SFPD Captain Rick Yick.

The SFPD captain said that the thieves trailed the truck and struck when they had the opportunity. The police captain said that a witness who observed the incident said that "three unidentified suspects wearing hooded shirts"used a white Dodge van in the heist.

 UPS and Apple are working with the police in regards to the heist. However, the stolen iPhone can be tracked using their IMEI serial numbers if people report suspicious sales.

 SFPD spokeswoman Grace Gatapandan adviced buyers to stay away from third-party sellers and always purchase items from stores.

Over 1 Million Android Users Fooled To Download Fake Whatsapp On Google Play Store

 The Google Play Store has always been a haven for cybercriminals who have been plaguing it with malicious apps, all thanks to the Play Stores poor security check system.

 This week Cybercriminals uploaded a fake version of the WhatsApp application and then managed to fool over a million Android users into downloading the app.

Dubbed "Update WhatsApp Messenger", the fake app which was discovered by some a Reddit user was said to be bearing the same title used with that of the original WhatsApp developers which is "WhatsApp Inc." The title of the developer made Android users to believe that the app was coming from the real developers.

 I know that you will be wondering how the miscreants managed to upload into the Play Store such app bearing the same title with that of the original developers. Well, this was made possible all thanks to a Unicode character space.

The app maker added a  Unicode character space after the WhatsApp Inc name which reads as WhatsApp+Inc%C2%A0 in computer. However, the cod added at the end of the WhatsApp title would be invisible to users browsing the Play Store as what they would see instead would be WhatsApp Inc which makes it to masquerade as the product of WhatsApp Inc.

Those who installed it said the app downloads and runs the real WhatsApp application served with advertisements all wrapped around it.

"I've also installed the app and decompiled it," One Reddit user said. "The app itself has minimal permissions (internet access) but it's basically an ad-loaded wrapper which has some code to download a second apk also called 'whatsapp.apk.' the app also tries to hide by not having a title and having a blank icon."

 Google has removed the fake app from the Play Store although Android users are wondering if Google is ever going to win the war against such on its platform.

 Google have been trying hard in combating fake and malicious aktivitas son the Play Store but still malicious programs keep beating their security system to find their way into the store. There are over hundreds of malicious apps on the Play Store

Facebook Says 250 Million Accounts Are Fake On Its Platform

Popular social media network Facebook has admitted that about 270 million of accounts on its platform are fake.

 The social network which has been under pressure over Russia using the platform to meddle with  the recently concluded US presidential election, estimated that fake accounts had increased from 2 to 3 percent while the number of duplicate accounts rose from 6 to 10 percent of its 2.1 billion monthly users.

 The 3 percent of fake accounts and 10 percent of duplicate accounts sum up to 13 percent. Now this 13 percent from the 2.1 billion monthly users gives about 270 million accounts -- erm fake accounts.

Facebook made the disclosure in the small print of its earnings presentation during which it revealed a 79 percent increase in profits to $4.7 billion made quarterly.

 Facebook explained that improvements to the data helped in identifying those illegal accounts, rather than a sudden increase in fake users registration. However, the company warned that there may have been some moments of high spikes in countries like Indonesia and Vietnam.


Facebook also admitted that 126 million users on its platform in the US saw adverts funded by Russia, and another 20 million on Instagram.
