Microsoft is working on a new operating system called Santorini that is aimed to take on iOS on iPad and Google Chrome OS which is focused on the web, and has the advantage of running Android apps, WindowsCentral said.
The new Microsoft OS is said to be built on Windows Core OS, and was initially called 'Windows Lite' until Microsoft decided to use the code name "Santorini" because it sees it as. The new OS isn't a lesser version of Windows, but a totally new OS experience that Microsoft has designed for lightweight computing.
Just as it is with the naming of other versions of Windows Core OS such as Aruba, Oasis and others that still being tested internally, Windows doesn't choose the names randomly. Santorini for example, is one of the Greek Cylades islands in the Aegean sea.

Microsoft has designed Santorini for lightweight devices, such as folding computers, and other 2-in-1 laptops. The tech giant is already on working two of these Santorini devices code named 'Centaurus' and 'Pegasus'.
While Centaurus is the Santorini version that will work on foldable PCs, Pegasus will work on more traditional laptops and 2-in-1 laptops. One thing in common here is that both runs on Santorini, though the operating system will be adapted differently depending on the hardware in which it is being used.
Microsoft is expected to unveil the HoloLens 2 at the MWC 2019. Rumours also suggest that the tech giant might talk about Santorini at its Build developer conference in May, which help unveil many more details about the OS.
