Android 9 Pie Still On Very Few Android Devices, Oreo Becomes Second Most Popular - Distribution Report

The Android distribution numbers for October are here, we are yet to see Android 9 Pie reflect on the on the chart though its been almost three months since the OS update release by Google. Meanwhile, Oreo is has taken the second spot as the most used Android version.

According to the distribution data, Oreo sits on a total of 21.5% devices which is an increase of 2.3% points in just a single month. This point increment makes Oreo the second most used version of Android, toppling marshmallow.

Marshmallow which formerly sat second on the chart now occupies the third spot as it occupies  21.3% of Android devices.

Nougat, the most popular version of Android experienced a slide from 29.3% to 28.1%, though the Android version which was released in 2016 still remains the most widely used version of Android.

Other versions of Android that rounded up the list included Lolipop, Kitkat, Jelly Bean, Ice Cream and Gingerbread. Lolipop surprisingly occupied 17.9% of Android devices, while Kitkat occupied 7.6% and Jelly Bean 3.0%. Ice Cream and Gingerbread occupied 3% and 2% respectively.

We expect Android 9 Pie to appear on the distribution listing soon as the end of the year sales draws closer. The Google Pixel 3 and 3 XL along those newly released Android device running Android 9 Pie will make the Android version have an appearance.

Devices likes the Essential Phone, Nokia 7, OnePlus 6 and a few others are already running on the latest version of Android operating system. However, the introduction of Project Treble should help in pushing these updates faster to Droid users.
